Nice to know / FAQ
I am really sure that the URL I entered is correct. However, Paper Pile always tells me that it is wrong.
Paper Pile does not read the website itself. Instead, it tries to find an appropriate RSS feed. Even when the URL you entered is correct, there might not be any of these feeds so Paper Pile simply cannot use it.
Why don’t you just read the website’s content?
That’s easy. Because the content was written by somebody else. This person decides where this content is published. Since Paper Pile respects the copyrights of the author, it does never use content that has not been explicitly published to be read and used by a programm.
To cut a long story short: Paper Pile is just a nice looking RSS reader.
When I use my favorite website, I only get really short articles creating a page full of squares.
Paper Pile can only use the content the website provides. Sometimes, these articles are really short or do not have any text at all. The only thing you can do about this is telling the webmaster of the site you’d like to use about this link: http://www.paper-pile.com/support/information-for-webmasters.
How many sources can I use?
As many as you like.
Why is Dilbert’s comic strip not working?
Paper Pile examines some properties of a feed’s item to determine the best dimensions on a page. Since Dilbert’s RSS feed only provides an image, so the app decides to size the article to the smallest area possible. This renders Dilbert to be quite useless. Unfortunately, Paper Pile cannot provide a special “Dilbert mode” since this could cause the app to be regarded as using unauthorized content. This issue is still on the list – hopefully, there will be a nice working solution in one of the future updates.
I only see old articles, but I am sure that the site got updated. What can I do?
Sometimes feeds get updated so that articles include additional information. Sometimes already published articles get canceled and re-published later. All of these action may confuse the sorting algorithms. You can force a redraw of the page by double-taping the page’s title at the top.
How do the articles get sorted? Which one is first?
The latest article is displayed on top. However, this is the only promise I can give. You will always see the articles that are brand new, whereas the order can differ on the page.
Do I need to be online to read my newspaper?
Definitely not. Of course you need an Internet connection when you want Paper Pile to get the latest news. Once you received them, you can read all your pages offline.
Can I save an article or a page to read it later again?
Not yet. This will be included in an update later.
Sometimes the image is way to small. Can I enlarge it?
This happen when there is only a small piece of empty paper left but the rating system really likes the picture. This issue will be improved with an update.
Can I reorder my pages?
Tap and hold on one of the little thumbnails. It will move a little bit to the top. While you’re still touching the page, you can pull it to another position.
How do I get rid of a feed. I have clicked all the X marks but it is impossible to delete a feed once it is in. If you try, it duplicates. I this starts to work as advertised, I have an interest in finding a way to blend pages from my newspaper with your technology to provide an extended product to my customers/readers. I am a newspaper publisher and I am very interested in your concept. Let me hear from you.
Open the sources list by touching the “manage” button at the top-right corner of the pages list. Then, just swipe over a source entry to delete it.
Regarding only seeing old articles, refreshing the page, and forcing it to rebuild, does nothing to pull in newer articles. Trying this every day, I am still not seeing any newer articles than 3 days ago. And these are well-maintained Mac feeds, not some obscure feeds the author may never update (i.e. Macdailynews.com).
Until this is fixed or changed, it pretty much renders this app useless.
I purchased your product and it looks interesting. I am having problems with it. Everytime I open it and scroll to the nextbpage the app crashes. Any thoughts on how to fix?
thinkblue77, I hope the latest update fixes the issues you mentioned. Let me know if you’re still experiencing strange behavior.
Bearmkt,
I cannot contact you with the mail address you provided. Can you please sent me another one using the contact form? Thank you.
Everytime i try to add an RSS feed ( http://www.nieuwsblad.be ) the app crashes.
After many tries i was able to get the RSS feed in but when you try to go to an article source it just doesn’t display it.
Love the to app, but some significant bugs to report:
Network I/O locks the app even when it works – You should show a progress dialog wih a cancel button. As a user i should always be in control. Worse, when networking is not available (e.g. In the subway) the app hangs. Yesterday I could not cancel the update or even exit the app (by holding down the home button) and had to power cycle my iPad!
The ui is randomly unresponsive to taps and swipes that should move between pages, to the point where navigating newspapers is quite frustrating.
For image/photo feeds, you should retrieve the photo/graphic and use it’s size to size the article. Currently dilbert, flickr, etc., feeds with just images aren’t usable.
As a suggestion, you should have a mechanism for common actions (refreshing, switching sections) that is more easily accessible than opening the ‘manage sections’ ribbon. For example, perhaps putting refresh directly on the main screen, and listing the sections in a small index list on the page? That is one less (randomly unresponsive) click.
Looks great !
I would buy it if it has a google reader import or sync function…I don’t see me reenter all my feeds on the app…
Google Reader Synchronization will be added soon. Stay tuned
I really lie the idea that appears to be behind this app. I won’t comment though on the UI at this point since I absolutely cannot keep the app running for more than a few tries. I have to delete it and reload it to make it work again. Add a few feeds to it and off it goes again – crash after crash after crash.
Fully agree with Laird Popkin’s Point 2 and 4! Especially the unresponsive UI is real crap and let me close your app very often.
Also, a suggestion. New items should have a bolder hi-light. The current blue is almost indistinguishable from the black. Perhaps new items could be better identified with a bright red or orange.
Thanka
Hi! This looks absolutely great! I just had to buy it (iPad)!
I can’t wait to actually use it when Google Reader Sync is integrated. Hope this will be soon. Then it will probably replace Reeder for me.
I just wanted to add something:
Since i need Google Reader Sync it should somehow include the Folder organization of my feeds and give me the possibility to mark my favourites (star). And of course this (favourites, read/unread messages) should be synced back to Google Reader. If you could integrate these functions, that would be really great!
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hi!
Really like Paper Pile! Great App!
There are only two Things I miss:
1) Mark an article As Read without opening it
2) Possibility to delete an article instantly

Hi,
i have problems with feeds from feedburner.com. Is it possible to extends Paper Pile in this way?
Thanks
Alex
Paper Pile will get a major update soon including a new feed parsing engine. This will solve your problem. Sorry for this.
Great ideas. I’ll consider including this.
